Mo Ibrahim in dialogue with SA youth

first_imgJohannesburg, 18 August 2013 –Active citizenship and building social cohesion was the topic of discussion at a youth dialogue with Dr Mo Ibrahim, at Johannesburg’s Maboneng Precinct on Sunday, 18 August. Brand South Africa and the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, as part of the Nelson Mandela Lecture Dialogue Series, hosted a youth discussion around active citizenship. Dr Ibrahim together with youth leaders Luvuyo Mandela, Zengeziwe Msimang, Neliswa Fente and Thulani Madondo made up the panel.Speaking at Maboneng Precinct, Brand South Africa CEO Miller Matola said, “Our role is to build South Africa’s reputation and to contribute to its competitiveness. However, we understand that to do so, we need all South Africans to play their part. The youth’s involvement in this dialogue is integral to ‘playing your part’. We hope that as the youth of our country, as people who will be leading the National Development Plan, that that you will be able to come up with actionable insights. We need to help push that vision forward because as we always say, what is required is not more policies, but rather action and implementation.”The discussion explored how young people can actively contribute towards the future of South Africa, through the implementation of the National Development Plan. The panel and audience members shared ideas as to how, by playing their part, they could contribute towards making South African a country of vision into reality. The following major points were raised during the discussion:• Shared values upon which societies are built on. The point was made that there needs to be a restoration of a common set of values and principles for shared existence and coexistence as Africans. • Active citizenship. It is the responsibility of each citizen to be a custodian and vanguard of our shared values and above all, respect each other’s roles. • Government accountability. Leaders must be accountable to citizens and there must be transparency in government.• Respect for human rights and dignity. Dignity is essential for the growth and development of Africans. Xenophobia should not be tolerated on any grounds throughout the African continent.• Basic access to education and economic resources. Without a basic education, young people cannot build their futures. It was stated that a lack of education creates a divide in society and a divide among all people.Dr Ibrahim said, “We can only have social cohesion when all sectors of society feel that they have justice, feel that they have a stake in their society, they have a role to play, they are respected and they have dignity.” About Brand South AfricaBrand South Africa is the official marketing agency of South Africa, with a mandate to build the country’s brand reputation, in order to improve its global competitiveness abroad. According to a post by Bret Taylor on the FriendFeed blog, FriendFeed will continue to operate normally for the time being while the two companies figure out the long-term plans. The purchase makes sense, as Facebook had continually copied parts of FriendFeed’s feature set – including the ‘like’ feature and Facebook’s new focus on the real-time stream.Facebook Users: Here’s What FriendFeed Brings to the Family It’s going to be a little like the Brady Bunch, this union between Facebook and the just-acquired social networking service FriendFeed. Both families will influence each other a lot, though Facebook is far, far bigger. Maybe it’s better to host your own. That’s the thinking coming from a growing number of early technology adopters as service after service goes down, sells out or otherwise frustrates the users. The prospect of a distributed, interoperable, self-hosted network of publishing, reading and discussion tools is nothing new – but the idea is gaining a lot more support as more people react to recent news like FriendFeed’s sale to Facebook,’s up and down and Twitter’s denial of service attacks. Gartner Hype Cycle 2009: Web 2.0 Trending Up, Twitter DownAnalyst firm Gartner released its latest Hype Cycle white paper this week, detailing some of the biggest trends in technology this year. According to the report, cloud computing, e-books and Internet TV are at the “Peak of Inflated Expectations,” while this year’s biggest hit Twitter is said to have “tipped over the peak” and is just about to enter the infamous “Trough of Disillusionment.” Interestingly, web 2.0 is deemed to be nearly past the Trough and entering the “Slope of Enlightenment.” Product Managers & Marketers: What The Internet of Things Means For You Some of you may be reading our series on the Internet of Things and wondering: what use is this to me in my daily work? For months the company has been pushing users towards being more public and less private. This is why.10 Ways to Archive Your Tweets Did you know that your tweets have an expiration date on them? While they never really disappear from your own Twitter stream, they become unsearchable in only 1.5 weeks. That’s bad for users and it’s definitely bad for data-mining. String of school shooting threats cause Fort Nelson School District to bolster

first_imgFORT NELSON, B.C. – The latest of a trio of school shooting threats against students in Fort Nelson this year has caused officials with School District #81 to bolster security measures at area schools – measures that will be making a sizeable dent in the school district’s budget.Back in February, the School District sent a letter sent home to parents saying that it had received reports of graffiti that contained an alleged threat that a shooting would occur at the school on February 6th. Last month, another threat of a school shooting was found to have been graffitied on the side of R.L. Angus School, which said a shooting would occur there on May 7th and 8th. The School District said it responded to both occurrences by calling the RCMP, who maintained an increased presence at the schools in the days following both instances. This past Wednesday, the School District sent home another letter to parents from Superintendent Diana Samchuk, which says that graffiti was found at Fort Nelson Secondary threatening that a school shooting would take place on June 20th – the final day of classes for the school year. Samchuk said that the RCMP are currently investigating the graffiti, while Safer Schools Together – the company that delivers the provincial violence Threat Assessment – has also been contacted. She said that the District has also locked all of the school’s doors, meaning everyone will have to use the front door until the end of the year, while police will also be increasing patrols of the area. The District sent home another letter to parents outlining alternative arrangements it has made for students writing their final exams on June 20th.Samchuk added that over the summer, the District will be upgrading security at all of its schools by adding more security cameras, installing windows into all classroom doors, and updating door locks. She said that the cost of those extra security measures will cost the District approximately $25,000.last_img read more

People wonder why Modi insults elders Kejriwal

first_imgNew Delhi: Hours after BJP veteran Murli Manohar Joshi announced he had been denied ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said that people were wondering why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “insulting elders”. In a series of tweets, Kejriwal said insulting elders was not part of Hindu or Indian culture. “The way Modi insulted his elders — (L.K.) Advani and Murli Manohar (Joshi), this is against Hindu culture. In Hinduism, we have been taught to respect our elders,” the Delhi Chief Minister said. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said that those who built the “house” — a reference to BJP — had been thrown out and questioned the loyalty of those “who are not loyal to their elders”. “Is this Indian culture? People are discussing why Modi is insulting Advani, Joshi and Sushma (Swaraj)?” Joshi, elected in 2014 from Kanpur, has announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party had told him not to contest the Lok Sabha election. The BJP has also denied ticket to Advani and replaced him with party President Amit Shah from the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat.last_img read more

Commentary The roar likely will never be restored for Tiger Woods

The man who electrified the sporting world when he won the 1997 Masters by a record 12 strokes at the age of 21 is not the player he once was. Tiger Woods is now 35 years old. He is still on pace to break Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major victories. However, Woods has gone 11 majors without winning, the longest streak of his career. Heck, he hasn’t won since Sept. 23, 2009. That’s not to say Woods still won’t break Nicklaus’ record. In early March, Nicklaus said it was too early to dismiss Woods’ chances. But that was before the Masters performance Woods turned in this past weekend. Yes, the literal “Tiger roar” returned to Augusta, Ga., as Woods made a Sunday charge on the front nine. In the past, Woods has made clutch putt after clutch putt to run away with the victory while others faded. That didn’t happen this weekend. He missed short putt after short putt. Even after leader Rory McIlroy collapsed, Woods couldn’t capitalize, and finished No. 33 in putting at the Masters. It’s fair to say the aura is gone. The younger players aren’t scared of Woods anymore. Sure, McIlroy buckled. But Jason Day, Adam Scott and the eventual Masters champion, Charl Schwartzel, all of whom are younger than Woods, didn’t blink. The 26-year-old Schwartzel birdied his last four holes on Sunday. How’s that for wilting under Woods’ pressure? Pressure is something Woods also puts on his body. Even his revamped swing involves incredible torque on his left leg. Shortly after he won the 91-hole 2008 U.S. Open, Woods revealed he’d been playing with a torn ACL in his left knee for more than 10 months, and had also suffered a double stress fracture in his left leg two weeks before the U.S. Open. Woods’ surgery to repair his left knee following the tournament was the third on his left knee since 2003. On Monday, Michael Wilbon, co-host of ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” said Woods should play more in order to induce more muscle memory and that Woods can’t afford to take so many tournaments off in between majors anymore. But, it appears Woods has no plans of doing that. Early last month, Woods was asked why he’d only played nine competitive rounds so far in 2011. “Well, because I have a family. I’m divorced,” Woods said. “If you’ve been divorced with kids, then you would understand.” The only court Woods had to appear in following his personal transgressions was divorce court. He split from former wife Elin Nordegren on Aug. 23, 2010 — but he was executed in the court of public opinion. Perhaps he truly has become a family man. Whether it’s an incomplete game, a lost aura, an injury history or family devotion, it’s clear Woods is a different man. What remains to be seen is whether he can break Nicklaus’ record, something that’s always been his No. 1 goal. read more
