SA tourism hits 9-million mark

first_img7 April 2008A total of 9.07-million foreigners visited South Africa in 2007 – representing an 8.3% increase over 2006 – as the country broke its annual tourist arrivals record for the third year running.Announcing the latest figures in a statement last month, Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said that the overall global growth rate for the year was just over 6%, indicating that South Africa was still outpacing international tourism growth rates.“Destination South Africa is well on its way to reaching 10-million arrivals by 2010,” Van Schalkwyk said.South Africa’s growth was seen across all air markets, the minister said. Africa remained the country’s biggest tourism source market, while consistent growth in arrivals from the Americas since 2002 made the US South Africa’s second biggest source market.US now SA’s second-biggest marketSouth Africa attracted over 22 000 more travellers from the US in 2007 – an 8.7% increase over 2006.Arrivals from Asia and Australasia also grew strongly in 2007 compared to 2006, with a 16.9% increase from India, 12.9% increase from China, and 6.9% increase in visitors from Australasia.“The only Asian market that showed a slight decrease was Japan, which posted a decrease of -0.4% over 2006,” Van Schalkwyk said.Arrivals from Europe grew by 2.3% over 2006, driven by an 8.5% increase in arrivals from France. Arrivals from the Netherlands grew 3.5%, and from Italy by 2.2%.“Germany was the only European country that posted negative growth of 1.4%, which was largely due to market-specific activity,” Van Schalkwyk said.African arrivals continue to growSouth Africa’s African air markets, meanwhile, showed good growth for the year, with Kenya coming in with a strong 14.7% increase over 2006, Nigeria posting a 12.8% increase, and Angola growing strongly from a low base with a 10.2% increase over 2006.Closer to home, arrivals from Botswana continued their growth curve of recent years, with 55 000 more visitors coming to South Africa from Botswana in 2007, representing a 7.3% increase over 2006.The increase in arrivals, especially air arrivals, from all regions of the world reflected not only the growing awareness of South Africa as a tourism destination but also “the success of the airlift strategy passed by Cabinet last year that resulted in increased access to the South African market for foreign carriers,” Van Schalkwyk said.More direct flightsThe airlift strategy has seen Delta Airlines flying direct to Johannesburg from Atlanta in the US, and the airline has plans to introduce a service between New York and Cape Town this year.South African Airways has introduced a service between Munich and Johannesburg, and Emirates Airlines now flies into Johannesburg 18 times a week and will soon be flying direct to Cape Town and then to Durban.China Eastern has opened the route to China, and Thai Air has re-established the route to Bangkok. There have also been requests from two UK airlines, as well as air carriers from South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Mozambique, Angola and Nigeria, for direct flights into South Africa.Post-apartheid tourism boomInternational tourism to South Africa has surged since the end of apartheid. In 1994, the year of South Africa’s first democratic elections, only 3.9-million foreign visitors arrived in the country.By 2004, international arrivals had more than doubled to 6.7-million. In 2005 they grew to 7.5-million (+10.3%), in 2006 to 8.4-million (+13.9%), and in 2007 to 9.07-million (+8.3%).Tourism is also one of the fastest growing sectors of South Africa’s economy, its contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) increasing from 4.6% back in 1993 to 8.3% in 2006. Directly and indirectly, tourism constitutes approximately 7% of employment in South Africa. And the outlook for the industry is extremely positive, particularly with the exposure the country will receive in the lead-up to the world’s biggest sporting event, the Fifa World Cup, taking place in South Africa in 2010.SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? IBM Launches Cloud Platform For Software Developers

first_imgIBM announced today a set of cloud services that will allow developers to develop and test cloud applications. In addition, IBM is offering free compute and storage for developers using the IBM platform.IBM Smart Business Development and Test on IBM Cloud is designed to remove burdens from developers who spend a lot of time setting up their own test environments for applications. By using this kind of a cloud service, developers can test in a fraction of the time, compared to more traditional methods. This has the potential to translate into a competitive advantage. By speeding up development, companies can move products faster to market. The service supports third-party and open-source tools. IBM is targeting IT managers who often are managing hundred of projects on an annual basis. IBM will also offer its service as a private cloud infrastructure. A private cloud infrastructure service is often designed for people who prefer governance and control over their own environment. The IBM offering is in some respects a collaboration platform for engineers and IT managers. They can share projects and do development and testing. It further permits distributed teams to collaborate on development projects.IBM is taking the right approach. They are focusing on education as a key component of the offering. They offer their own social network which serves as a resource for developers and IT managers. Cloud computing is still quite abstract for people and education helps customers feel more comfortable about making investments in cloud services. It helps mitigate the risk factor. 10 months agoArsenal and Tottenham make plea for supporters behaviour

first_imgAbout the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say Arsenal and Tottenham make plea for supporters behaviourby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal and Tottenham have issued statements asking their fans to behave during tonight’s EFL Cup quarter-final between the fierce north London rivals. The sides meet in the Premier League on December 2, with Arsenal running away 4-2 winners. But the game was marred by a Spurs fan throwing a banana onto the pitch as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a goal.Tottenham’s statement read: “Local derby matches are always passionate affairs and it is important that supporters play their part on these occasions by getting behind the team in a positive way and making them memorable for the right reasons.”We have enjoyed some unforgettable north London derby encounters over the years and the vast majority of fans have generated incredible atmospheres on these occasions.”However, there were incidents in our most recent Premier League fixture against Arsenal earlier this month where a small number of supporters of both sides behaved unacceptably.”Ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final tie we wish to remind supporters travelling to Emirates Stadium that any kind of racist, discriminatory or anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated by the club.”As a club that has suffered from abuse in the past from opposition supporters, we wish to make clear that there is absolutely no place for this kind of behaviour in or outside of football.”Arsenal posted on their website: “This fixture always generates an exciting and passionate atmosphere, however, we recently saw incidents where a small minority of fans have behaved unacceptably and unlawfully.”We appeal to both sets of supporters to get behind their team in positive and respectful ways without any discriminatory behaviour.” last_img read more

Ohio State baseball gives up rout to Oklahoma State 163

Ohio State baseball (21-22, 10-8 Big Ten) was looking to rebound from a series loss to Illinois going into their non-conference game against No. 19 Oklahoma State (32-15,12-8 Big 12), but instead were handed a 16-3 defeat behind the Cowboys’ offensive explosion. OSU went into the game hoping to improve above .500 behind senior starting pitcher Dean Wolosiansky. The captain could not get it going however and after giving up six runs in 4.1 innings was pulled out of the game. The pitching troubles did not stop there however, junior reliever Brian Bobinski let Wolosiansky’s two left-over runners score and then gave up five of his own runs in 1.2 innings. “We were up in the strike zone all night tonight and we made it easier on their hitters,” said coach Greg Beals. “They are good hitters, not taking anything away from them, but the quality of our pitches weren’t quite there tonight.” It took the Buckeyes offense until the seventh inning to get to Cowboys starter Andrew Heck. Through six Heck held OSU scoreless, but after loading the bases in the seventh, he hit junior David Corna to score a run. A following RBI ground out by junior outfielder Joe Ciamacco and throwing error produced the only three runs of the game for OSU. “It was a mixture between just as a team having a bad game, offensively and defensively,” said senior outfielder Brian DeLucia. “It’s definitely a lesson learned and we’re just going to have the mentality to come back and fight tomorrow.” Game two will be Wednesday with a 6:35 p.m. starting time. Freshman John Kuchno (1-4, 7.62 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Buckeyes. No pitching zone The bats for Oklahoma State came ready and Buckeye pitchers could do little to cool them. OSU pitching as a whole gave up 16 runs on 20 hits and only one was unearned. They have given up 41 runs in the past four games Wolosiansky’s woes The pitching struggles have continued for Wolosiansky with an outing that saw the captain starter give up 8 runs and 11 hits in only 4.1 innings of work. He went to 2-7 on the year and his overall ERA rose to 6.48. “This year hasn’t been his year but if we just stay together as a team and he keeps leading, that leadership reflects everything, so he’ll do alright and bounce back,” DeLucia said. Change in the bullpen After Wolosiansky was pulled in the fifth inning, Beals went with a different bullpen than usual, giving the ball to Bobinski and then letting junior Paul Geuy finish the last three innings. His usual bullpen rotation includes junior Andrew Armstrong, sophomore David Fathalikhani, senior Jared Strayer, and freshman two-way playerJosh Dezse. “We have to manage our personnel a little bit with conference being priority number one,” Beals said. “You’re not going to go to an Armstrong or Strayer or Dezse at that point in the ballgame.” read more
