The restaurant’s Southern Indian cuisine shares many similarities with Sri Lankan flavours, exemplified by fresh seafood, slow-roasted lamb, daal, fragrant curries, spiced pumpkin and a lighter-than-air coconut and cardamom foam that was the highlight of a dessert platter.Mario Stubbs, KK Collection sales and marketing consultant, Sally McKay, The Unique Tourism Collection and George Cooper, KK Collection founder and designerOver dinner, George shared that his Sri Lankan connections date back to 1860, when his great-grandfather arrived in what was then known as British Ceylon as a rubber planter. George, who began his career as a sought-after interior designer in London, travelled to Sri Lanka in 1999, searching for his ancestor’s home. During this visit, he happened upon a four-hectare tea estate 15 kilometres from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort, which was purchased in a hasty decision. The site would later become Kahanda Kanda, one of the island’s top boutique hotels. Its 10 individual suites – a collaboration between George and Sri Lanka-based Australian architect, Bruce Fell-Smith – offer views of the working estate, the palm-fringed jungle and Koggala Lake. Two new suites are set to open in time for peak season in November 2018, each one featuring its own plunge pool and decor that incorporates the work of local Sri Lankan artists, as well as George’s own personal possessions for that private-home feel.Kahanda KandaKK Beach is set on the southern coastline, 12 kilometres from Galle Fort. Launched in December 2018, the beachfront boutique hotel offers contemporary style across 10 rooms and delicious food at the Beach Club Restaurant and the Living Room and Bar. All the art on display by Sri Lankan artists is for sale, with further souvenirs available at the KK Boutique in Galle Fort.KK BeachAt both properties (which are connected by a shuttle service), guests may enjoy swimming in the on-site pools, cooking classes and yoga, as well as the water sports, canoeing, cycling, whale-watching and cultural tours afforded by the properties’ proximity to Koggala Lake and Galle Fort.KK Collection ‘Best of Both Worlds’ packages are available for six or nine nights, with accommodation at both KK Beach and Kahanda Kanda, a Sri Lankan cooking class, massages and a guided tour of the KK Tea Estate.Go back to the enewsletterKahanda KandaKK Beachlast_img
